President & CEO / Florida Hospital Association, Tallahassee
Mayhew, who has spent more than 30 years in and around government, leads the state’s main lobbying group for hospitals. She joined FHA as president and CEO in late 2020 after helping to lead Florida’s COVID-19 response as secretary of the state Agency for Health Care Administration. With Gov. Ron DeSantis, Mayhew worked during the early days of the pandemic to protect Florida’s nursing homes from the coronavirus. Mayhew, a native of Maine, came to Florida from Washington, D.C., where she briefly worked in the Trump administration as head of the federal Medicaid program. Before that, she led the Maine Department of Health and Human Services from 2011 to 2017. In an interview with Florida Trend last year, Mayhew said that in addition to the pandemic, she planned to focus on helping Florida’s hospitals improve care quality and access for people with mental health and substance use disorders. “Oftentimes, there are not the warm handoffs from the primary care physician to the specialist to diagnostic imaging, which can contribute to poor health outcomes,” she said.
