CARLOS J. ALFONSO
CEO, ALFONSO ARCHITECTS, TAMPA
The son of an architect, Alfonso was born in Cuba and at age 5 moved with his family in 1960 to Tampa, where his father rebuilt a successful practice. Following in his father’s footsteps, Alfonso earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture from the University of Florida.
Alfonso, together with his brother, Alberto, and their business partner Angel del Monte, founded Alfonso Architects in 1988. The award-winning 30-member firm based in Tampa’s Ybor City has worked on projects for Tampa International Airport, the University of South Florida, Nielsen Media Research, Streamsong Resort, Hillsborough County Public Schools and the Mission of St. Mary Chapel, among others.
Alfonso, who is also a commercial multi-engine, instrument-rated pilot, served on the University of Florida’s board of trustees for 11 years as a founding member and was its chairman in 2011-12. He currently serves on the board of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Institute and is vice chair for the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
