Since Neal founded the company with his father in 1970, Neal Communities has completed about 124 communities and 21,000 homes primarily in Sarasota and Manatee but also in Hillsborough, Lee and Collier counties. Neal and his company have contributed more than $10 million to community organizations. The Wharton B-school graduate also made his mark in Florida politics — as a Democratic state senator in the 1980s and now as a prominent Republican donor. Neal is a member of the state’s Judicial Nominating Commission and the board of trustees of Florida TaxWatch. He has been chairman of both and also served on transition teams for Govs. Ron DeSantis, Rick Scott and Charlie Crist.
