DAVID BARILLA
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY/DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT BOARD, ORLANDO
Barilla has been a leader with Orlando’s Downtown Development Board for 13 years, working with a team of 65 to reimagine Central Florida’s urban core. From revitalizing downtown spaces and fostering partnerships with developers and artists to championing affordable housing and transportation solutions, it’s reshaping how people live, work and connect in Orlando. This vision is further realized through high-profile developments like the $500-million Westcourt project, adjacent to the Kia Center, home of the NBA’s Orlando Magic.
EDUCATION: University of Central Florida (BS), University of Florida (MBA)
FIRST JOB: Flipping pizzas at a local mom-and-pop shop.
DREAM ALTERNATE CAREER: I had dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. Like many kids, I was inspired by Top Gun and drawn to the excitement and service aspect of aviation. While my career took a different path, I still pursued flying lessons and found joy in the skies.
passion project: I’ve helped launch 407 Connect, an innovative homelessness solution through the CRA and Christian Service Center. Our involvement began with a late-night visit to a Vero Beach service provider and has grown into a project using retrofitted charter buses to provide overnight shelter and case management. With a goal to house 407 individuals in three years, it’s one of the most meaningful efforts I’ve been part of.
MENTEE IMPACT: One of my proudest moments was seeing a former assistant become an elected official. I recognized her passion early on and helped nurture it through mentorship and opportunities for growth. Watching her rise and serve the community continues to be a source of personal fulfillment.
