ERNIE BARNETT

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, FLORIDA LAND COUNCIL, TALLAHASSEE/WEST PALM BEACH

The Florida Land Council consists of 19 principal members who own over 3 million acres throughout Florida. It was established in 1985 for the purpose of protecting the asset value of the members’ landholdings and proactively engages with regulatory and resource management agencies to help formulate public policies that allow landowners to continue their stewardship of their lands. Barnett has more than 40 years of water resources management experience and public service and has contributed to several landmark environmental laws.

IF I WERE GOVERNOR: I would continue the state’s strong commitment to funding environmental restoration and protection programs. Florida needs significant water and wastewater investments to implement septic-to-wastewater conversions and additional stormwater treatment necessary to protect our waters. Additional funding is needed for conservation easements that will allow landowners to protect wildlife habitats while keeping their lands productive. To their credit, legislators and the governor are providing meaningful resources for this effort.

INSPIRING FLORIDIAN: My biggest inspiration was former Gov. Reubin Askew. I was fortunate to team teach a class with the Governor for 17 years at FSU. Over this time, he became a dear friend. Gov. Askew played a pivotal role in the development of Florida’s environmental legacy.
