DANIEL CANE

CEO, MODERNIZING MEDICINE, BOCA RATON

Modernizing Medicine provides technology to medical and surgical specialists in the U.S. The firm has 800 employees, of which 600 are in Florida. The company, not quite 10 years old, was co-founded by Cane and his dermatologist, Dr. Michael Sherling, at the height of the recession. With venture capital unavailable, $3 million in initial funding came from customers. The company is the No. 1-ranked electronic medical record application for dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, plastic surgery and ENT in the U.S.

EDUCATION Cornell University (BS)
SOMETHING SURPRISING I founded my first major company while still in school — Blackboard, which we took public in 2003.
FAVORITE PART OF LEADERSHIP I still participate in orientation for each and every new employee in the company.
ALTERNATE CAREER? Something to help the environment — clean energy or energy storage
