MARK E. GALE
CEO & DIRECTOR OF AVIATION, FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FORT LAUDERDALE
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is one of the busiest airports in the U.S. Gale assumed leadership of the 600-employee Broward County Aviation Department in 2016 and oversees FLL and North Perry Airport. He previously had spent 16 years at Philadelphia International Airport, the last seven years as its CEO. Under his tenure, FLL has undergone more than $1.5 billion in terminal improvements, expansions and refurbishments.
EDUCATION: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (BS)
FIRST JOB: My first job (at 15 years old) was as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. In my case, it was a small, family-owned Italian restaurant and pizzeria. Paying attention and not to miss an opportunity, I began learning various cooking skills and tossing pizza dough in the air like a pro. I also learned a little about the challenges of running a small business.
DREAM ALTERNATE CAREER: As a high school student and before pursuing my passion for aviation, I thought about possibly pursuing a career in architecture or engineering. I always did well in math, and I was somewhat fascinated by how large structures (buildings, bridges, dams, etc.) were designed and constructed … and still am!
INDUSTRY TREND: In the current moment, the trend — or rather concern — centers around uncertainty in the macroeconomy. Like other forms of transportation, aviation helps connect each of us and the world together. Whether traveling for business, vacation or just visiting family and friends, we depend on a reliable air transportation system in all its facets, including airports, airlines and air traffic control. Lately, that has been challenged due to sociopolitical and other significant influences. I’m hoping that the “turbulence” in our industry (and frankly beyond) calms down soon and we find smoother air.
