STEVE PHELPS
COMMISSIONER, NASCAR, DAYTONA BEACH
Phelps had been president of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) since 2018 before he was named as NASCAR’s first commissioner in March. As the Sports Business Journal noted, it’s a new position that “will allow him to take a more big-picture role at NASCAR and optically be on a more level playing field with stick-and-ball leaders like NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.” Phelps is looking to expand NASCAR’s audience, adding a race on the streets of Chicago, which he says has prompted interest from other cities such as San Diego. Before joining NASCAR, Phelps worked for 14 years in the NFL.
