JOHN COURIS
PRESIDENT & CEO, FLORIDA HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER, TAMPA
Since 2017, Couris has been president of Florida Health Sciences Center, which encompasses several organizations including Tampa General Hospital. TGH is one of the nation’s largest non-profit academic medical centers and research health systems, operating in partnership with the University of South Florida. Couris also is helping to establish the Tampa Medical and Research District spanning 1,500 acres in and around downtown Tampa.
EDUCATION: Boston University, (BS), Lesley University (MS), University of South Florida (Ph.D)
FIRST JOB: I got my start in health care working as an orderly at a nursing home while I was working my way through college at Boston University.
DREAM ALTERNATE CAREER: If I wasn’t working in health care, I think I would have been a college professor.
SOMETHING SURPRISING: I was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child. While it presented many challenges throughout my life, it has also been one of my greatest teachers. Because of my learning difference, today I understand the importance of grit, courage and determination in the face of adversity. It also instilled in me the importance of leading with empathy and authenticity.
HOBBY: My favorite hobby outside of work is boating. Honestly, there is nowhere I would rather be than out on the water, and I feel fortunate to live in a state that affords me easy access to some of the most beautiful water and views in the world.
