SHANE STRUM
PRESIDENT & CEO, BROWARD HEALTH, FORT LAUDERDALE
Boasting five hospitals, two trauma centers and an ever-growing graduate medical education program, Broward Health includes 50-plus health centers and physician practices served by more than 11,000 employees and physicians. With an operating budget of $1.8 billion, Broward Health annually contributes more than $470 million of charity and uncompensated care. Strum, a Broward County native who previously served as chief of staff to Gov. Ron DeSantis, has led the organization since 2021. Strum is also interim CEO of Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood and in February announced the two hospital districts’ “Better Together” initiative to expand access to primary and maternity care in the county and tackle the role food insecurities play in health.
EDUCATION: University of Alabama (BA), Nova Southeastern University (MBA)
FIRST JOB: One of my first jobs was as a marketer for Nova Southeastern University.
HOBBY: I am an avid history buff, specifically history regarding the state of Florida. It is intriguing to see the exponential growth experienced by our state in the past 100 years, evolving from sleepy towns to huge metropolises that are economic engines for the entire nation.
NONPROFIT PASSION: As a father to a great daughter, I am proud to be engaged with Florida Girls Giving Back. This nonprofit serving Broward County girls in grades 8 to 12 does an exceptional job of demonstrating how girls can create their own future through life choices, volunteerism, career paths and much more.
INDUSTRY TREND: The health care industry is evolving rapidly — from treatments and uses of technology to care models and business practices. But perhaps what’s most notable is the consolidation of health systems, whether through mergers or collaborations. As resources become limited, costs escalate and clinical staff — both physicians and nurses — are in greater demand due to shortages, health systems must look for ways to collectively create new business models. As a result, there is a national trend of health systems working together to bridge any perceived gaps and expound on opportunities existing within in the sub-specialty care space.
