MICHAEL SIMAS
PRESIDENT & CEO, FLORIDA COUNCIL OF 100, TAMPA
The Florida Council of 100 is an exclusive network of business leaders who work together to enhance the economy and quality of life for all Floridians. The council engages this network to develop and implement solutions to the state’s biggest challenges. Simas became President and CEO in 2024 after serving as COO for a year. Prior to joining the organization, he was executive vice president of the Partnership for New York City, whose members are the CEOs of New York’s biggest employers.
EDUCATION: University of Rhode Island (BA)
FIRST JOB: Growing up, I worked a variety of odd jobs helping my dad and grandfather with painting, mowing lawns, and pitching in wherever work needed to get done. Those early experiences taught me the value of showing up and contributing. My first formal job was as a busboy at a country club in Rhode Island at age 16.
DREAM ALTERNATE CAREER: I enjoy cooking, so I think I would attend culinary school and explore what it would be like to be a trained chef.
SOMETHING SURPRISING: My first trip to Florida without my parents was my junior year of college. A few friends and I — aspiring Jimmy Buffett Parrotheads — dreamed of reaching the end of U.S. 1 in Key West. With no spring break plans, we drove from Rhode Island with just a tent. We made it, but quickly learned blazing sun and a nearby naval base don’t make for restful sleep. We left the next day, but the experience left a lasting impression.
