MARK BREWER
PRESIDENT & CEO, CENTRAL FLORIDA FOUNDATION, ORLANDO
The Central Florida Foundation focuses on innovative solutions for social problems as it stewards philanthropic dollars on behalf of individuals, families and nonprofits. It also serves as a trusted convener across public, private and independent sector collaborations. Brewer has led the foundation for 25 years. “I’ve long believed that nonprofits should see themselves as social enterprises — mission-driven organizations that are also financially sustainable and entrepreneurial in spirit. It’s a perspective I’ve been championing across the sector for decades,” says Brewer.
FIRST JOB: A disc jockey playing Top 40 hits. At the time, it seemed like just spinning records, but it taught me the power of connection.
DREAM ALTERNATE CAREER: Likely, I would have continued my path in journalism. I spent years as a reporter, anchor and journalist — and that passion still runs deep.
SOMETHING SURPRISING: I’m deeply passionate about my dog, Blaze, and the specialized training he’s undergoing to become a search and rescue dog. My wife and I previously had the privilege of working with our dog, Bogart, who volunteered with distinction in search and rescue.
INDUSTRY TREND: Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the idea that meaningful change rarely emerges from times of comfort and complacency. Historically, this is true: It’s during periods of disruption — like the one we’re in now — that meaningful change usually takes place. I believe this trend will hold true and that this moment of turmoil will spark significant action and innovation within the philanthropic sector that otherwise might not have happened.
