WENDY SPENCER
PRESIDENT & CEO, LEADERSHIP FLORIDA, TALLAHASSEE
Now in its 43rd year, Leadership Florida is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that hosts programs each year in an experiential “class” format for Florida leaders who are selected through a competitive process. Members represent all sectors of Florida’s economy, and each class or cohort is composed of a diverse group of leaders by gender, race, geographic location, interests and occupations. Members learn about issues facing Florida and use the network to grow professionally and personally. Spencer has served as president and CEO for the past eight years.
EDUCATION: Valdosta State University (BS)
FIRST JOB: My very first job was at 14 in Thomasville, Ga., where I operated a pressing machine that pressed images onto T-shirts. It was a hot fad at the time! My first job after college was assistant director of personnel for Sunnyland Food Co. in Thomasville, Ga.
DREAM ALTERNATE CAREER: Assuming I had talent, I would be a singing Broadway actor and entertainer. Since I do not possess that talent, I would not change a thing.
MENTEE IMPACT: Since I oversaw AmeriCorps for the nation, I have had countless young women share with me that I was their mentor, and they strived to be a leader like me. This occurred so often that I remain well aware that my actions are being viewed at all times, and it is so important to lead with grace, dignity and be my authentic self, all while being an inspiration to others.
HOBBY: I love croquet, pickleball, golf, and tennis and watching college football. I particularly love croquet and have won some tournaments; one where the winning point was done with a jump shot that I did backwards!
