BEMETRA SIMMONS
PRESIDENT & CEO, TAMPA BAY PARTNERSHIP, TAMPA
The Tampa Bay Partnership is a coalition of about 40 regional business and nonprofit executives, driven to improve the personal and economic well-being of residents in the region. It fosters collaboration between employers, government, and nonprofit partners to address pressing issues impacting the community through research, thought leadership, and public policy work. Simmons, who has served as president and CEO for about two and half years, oversees a staff of four.
EDUCATION: Christian Brothers University (BS), Wake Forest University (MBA)
IF I WERE GOVERNOR: Tampa Bay residents are moving to outer-lying counties in pursuit of housing options that maximize their dollar. Additional public transit options will improve the speed, safety, and affordability of transportation for those who live farther from the urban core.
MENTORS: My parents are my greatest mentors. They exemplify integrity, generosity, and service. Professionally, I am thankful to have had guidance from Bobby Blakely, former regional president of BB&T Bank. He taught me techniques to advance my career, the value of cross regional relationships, and negotiation techniques.
WHAT I’VE LEARNED
“While a great work product is critical to building a professional reputation and helping one advance, ultimately, business is not a meritocracy.”
