JEFF JOHNSON
STATE DIRECTOR, AARP FLORIDA, ST. PETERSBURG
AARP is the nation’s largest nonprofit, non-partisan organization for people 50 years old and older. Johnson has served as state director since 2010. “When I started in the state director role, I discovered that Florida’s business community primarily heard that older adults were an economic burden to be avoided, rather than a key driver of Florida’s economic future,” Johnson says. “By continuing to show up in business circles with good research and common sense, we’ve been able to help Florida leaders recognize that older adults are a resource worth investing in.”
EDUCATION: Wake Forest University (BA), Emory University (M.Div.)
SOMETHING SURPRISING: My first “real job” was as the director of media relations for the Atlanta Glory of the start-up (and now long-defunct) American Basketball League.
PASSION PROJECT: AARP is a secular organization, so to exercise my theological education, I have blogged since roughly 2013. Last year, I released my first book, Abandoning Temples.
