INSPIRING FLORIDIAN: Dr. Cedric Sheffield. He’s not only the brilliant surgeon who performed my heart transplant on July 10, 2023, but he’s also a walking encyclopedia of Florida history. During my recovery, he would visit and captivate me with stories about Florida’s Native and African American heritage. For so many reasons, Dr. Sheffield is my hero.
WHAT I’VE LEARNED: One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned, particularly after my heart transplant, is that we are all capable of doing hard things. Facing a major health challenge taught me resilience and the power of perseverance. Each day, tackling something difficult — even if it’s small — moves us closer to success.
