BARBARA FERNANDEZ
PARTNER-IN-CHARGE, HINSHAW & CULBERTSON, CORAL GABLES/MIAMI
Fernandez is the partner-in-charge of Hinshaw’s Miami office, the first woman to hold the position since Hinshaw opened the office in 1988. Her career at Hinshaw spans 21 years, and she supervises approximately 75 attorneys and staff. She serves as the office mentor coordinator in Miami, where she administers the mentor program and serves as an advisor for young attorneys in challenging situations. Fernandez is also an active member of the Miami-Dade Florida Association of Women Lawyers and the National Association of Women Lawyers.
EDUCATION: Florida International University (BS), University of Miami (JD)
FIRST JOB: My undergraduate degree is in broadcast journalism and before I started law school, I took a job as a writer for WSVN’s (Ch. 7) morning news broadcast. I worked the graveyard shift from midnight to 8 a.m. This job was fast-paced and taught me to think on my feet and react decisively.
SOMETHING SURPRISING: Even though I live in South Florida, I greatly enjoy snow skiing with my family. Every year, we go to a different ski resort in the U.S. or Canada.
DREAM ALTERNATE CAREER
“I would like to be a journalist. I enjoy the research side of journalism as well as storytelling.”
