One of Florida’s largest publicly held bank groups underwent big changes at the top this year. Smith remains chairman and CEO of the group, watching over corporate strategy, governance and long-term financial performance. But as of July 1, the subsidiary bank’s president of 30 years, Tom Barron, became president of the bank group and chairman of the bank board. And COO Bethany Corum succeeded Barron to become president of the Capital City bank subsidiary, the bank’s first female president in its 130 years. Capital City has $4.5 billion in assets and 62 offices in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Its most recent new office was in Panama City Beach. Smiths have led the bank for more than 50 years. A Florida State University grad, Bill Smith started there in 1978, becoming president and CEO in 1995 and chairman in 2003. His community service includes the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, the Florida Bankers Association and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He was inducted into the FSU College of Business Hall of Fame in 2009.
